So I had to work up North one week and I decided to take advantage of being up so far North and check out the top of the North Island.

It was another beach, it was pleasant. I sat down and took a power nap and watched the birds like this sea gull. There were a bunch of Maori people having a picnic lunch at the beach too.

I decided to stay the night in a town called Ahipara. There was a backpackers right on the beach and it was pretty nice. I wanted to stay another night but they were full the next day!

The sun is beginning to go down. I took a walk along the beach and just looked for crabs and other little fish in the puddles. I ended up making a friend. There was a dog that followed me and hung out and played catch with me for the hour or so I was exploring. It turned out to be a guys dog who was driving a camper van across the country.

So we made a trip down to National Park which is about 4 hours from Auckland. Most people come down here to go snow boarding or skiing but we decided to go hiking!

There is a hiking circuit called the "Northern Tongariro Circuit" and the Tongariro Crossing is the first day of the circuit and the Tama Lakes walk is the third day of the walk that makes the loop! I liked the Tama Lakes walk better than the Tongariro Crossing!

Then I took in some culture and went to a show put on by Waitangi Maori people. I got nominated to be chief of our group and was greated by a warrior Maori whom looked to be going crazy with a spear and then I shook hands and rubbed noses with their chief. It was called the "hongi". We all got taught to do the haka too! That was cool!

So when I flew into Hilo I realized that the only thing to do over on this side of the island is going to the Volcano National Park and the only way to get there was buy car and not public transport.

So I rented a car after the fact of walking about 3 miles carrying about 80lbs of luggage to the hostel. Google maps said it was only about 1.25 miles but it was definitely a good 3 miles when I checked the speedometer on the way back.
